Checkmate from a distance

Distant checks are often easier to defend. But as you have seen in Pawn level, mating from a distance is possible. Do you remember how to do it?

Study the example to refresh your memory. The board is less empty than it used to be. But don’t worry, you are a much better chess player by now.

What do you have to do?
Checkmate the king from a distance. Make sure that Black cannot get out of check by capturing, blocking of moving away.
Black’s king is in trouble. He can only move to one of the green squares.
It might seem a good idea to check the king with the queen.
But it is not. Black’s queen is on the same rank. She would take White’s queen to get out of check. Bye bye queenie!

Fortunately, White’s rook can check the king as well.
The king is trapped. Blocking is (still) not possible. Neither is capturing the rook.
Checkmate!
